Longhouses were set up in villages. Each longhouse was covered on the sides with ropelike grass and tree bark. Its roof was made of bark and strenthened with animal skins. If the skins and bark were peeled away, a frame of bent young trees would appear.

Inside, a crackling fire would welcome visitors.

Longhouses were designed to house many families. Each family had separate fires and sleeping areas. Holes was cut in the roof of the longhouse to allow the smoke from the fires to escape. If the longhouse had fives holes in the roof, it indicated that five families lived in the longhouse.
